IV Certification

Class Description: This 21 hour course is designed to follow the Colorado Department of Health and Environment EMS Division requirements. All students will be required to successfully complete the following: No less than 10 successful venipunctures utilizing over-the-needle intravenous catherters or butterfly needles. No less than four (4) of the required 10 successful venipunctures must be performed on real patients in a clinical environment.
All students will have 90 days after the last class to have all clinical requirements completed in order to receive certification. All students MUST have a physician advisor prior to beginning any clinical rotations.

Class Objectives: Understand the following: Roles, responsibilities, and legal considerations, cellular and vascular anatomy and physiology, shock principles, body substance isolation, venipuncture site selection and preparation, phlebotomy equipment, phlebotomy venipuncture technique, intravenous therapy equipment, medthod of combining phlebotomy and intravenous therapy techniques, drip rate calculation, maintenance of intravenous therapy, discontinuation of intravenous therapy, intravenous therapy in the management of adult and pediatric care, documentation, blood glucose testing and administration of intravenous dextrose, administration of narcan, intravenous and intranasal, administration of albuterol, nebulized.
